On April 29th, Abba Cakes had the honour of welcoming the Mayor of Wirral, Cherry Povall JP, and the Mayoress, Sheila Clarke MBE, for a special visit to celebrate the bakery’s incredible achievement—winning Britain’s Best Cake Award 2025.
The distinguished guests were greeted by Abba Cakes’ proud owner, Laura Johnson, who sat down with them to share the story behind her now-famous bakery. Although the shop has only been open for just over two years, it has already gained national recognition thanks to its irresistible creation, The Chocolate Cake. Following the award win, BBC North West News picked up the story, propelling the cake—and the shop—further into the spotlight.
Since then, Laura and her team have struggled to keep up with the demand. The Chocolate Cake, sold by the slice in the shop, has been flying off the shelves multiple times a day. Whole cakes are now being ordered at a record pace for birthdays, garden parties, and special events across Wirral and beyond.
During their visit, the Mayor and Mayoress were clearly impressed by Laura’s ambition, entrepreneurial spirit, and dedication to her craft. In fact, Mayor Povall was so inspired that she made phone calls during the meeting to introduce Laura to influential local contacts—other women in business, who could help create new opportunities for Abba Cakes to supply their award-winning cakes to larger events and prestigious venues.
Laura also shared her hopes of using her platform to give back to the community. She expressed a desire to host charitable events using her cakes to raise funds for local causes, a vision that resonated strongly with the Mayor.
To commemorate the visit, Laura presented the Mayor and Mayoress with their very own Britain’s Best Cake—a delicious token of appreciation and a slice of Wirral’s finest baking success.
It was a proud day for Laura and her team. With local support growing and regional recognition firmly in place, the future is looking as sweet as ever.
